The Grand Circumnavigation of Mt. Manaslu (8,163m)

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is celebrated by world mountaineers and trekkers as Nepal’s most authentic, uncrowded, and culturally rich wilderness circuit. Traversed in a complete counter-clockwise loop around the world’s 8th highest mountain, this 14-day expedition delivers dramatic river gorge hiking, untouched Tibetan-Nubri culture, high glacial lakes, and the triumphant crossing of Larkya La Pass (5,106m).

Because the Manaslu region was opened to foreigners only in 1991 and remains protected under strict Nepal Department of Immigration restricted area regulations (requiring a minimum of two trekkers and a government-licensed guide), the trail has preserved its pristine Himalayan ecology and ancient Buddhist traditions. You will trek past cascading waterfalls along the Budhi Gandaki river, visit centuries-old monasteries like Ribung Gompa in Lho, explore the stone village of Samagaon (3,530m) beneath the immense ice wall of Manaslu, hike to emerald-green Birendra Lake, and cross into the Annapurna conservation area via the breathtaking alpine panorama of Bimthang.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers from our senior expedition leaders covering Manaslu permits, pass conditions, and logistics.

Showing all 12 questions
Can I trek the Manaslu Circuit solo without a guide? +

No. Under Nepal Department of Immigration restricted area laws, solo trekking is illegal in Manaslu. Trekkers must travel with at least 2 people in the permit application and be accompanied by a government-licensed guide. If you are a solo traveler, we easily pair you with one of our guaranteed small groups.

What permits are required and are they included in the price? +

Three permits are required: Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP), Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), plus TIMS. All permit fees and processing are 100% included in our package price.

How difficult is crossing Larkya La Pass (5,106m)? +

Larkya La Pass is a strenuous alpine crossing taking 8 to 9 hours on pass day. The ascent is steady and non-technical, but cold and snowy. Because our itinerary includes a full acclimatization day in Samagaon (3,530m) and a staged stay in Samdo (3,860m), over 99% of our trekkers cross smoothly.

What are teahouses like and are rooms private? +

Teahouses along the circuit have upgraded significantly. You will stay in clean twin rooms with foam mattresses, warm quilts, and heated central dining rooms. In Dharamsala (high camp), accommodation is simpler, but our team pre-books beds in advance.

What medical safety and emergency protocols are in place? +

Your licensed guide carries a medical pulse oximeter to track blood oxygen twice daily and an alpine trauma kit. In case of emergency, helicopter evacuation standbys are available at Samagaon, Samdo, and Bimthang.

How does the 15% flexible deposit policy work? +

You pay a 15% deposit ($194) online to lock in your restricted permit slots and departure dates. The remaining 85% balance is paid upon arrival in Kathmandu. All deposits have lifetime validity and free date transfers up to 30 days prior.

What meals are included during the trek? +

Full board (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) is included on all 14 trekking days. Menus feature hot Dal Bhat, Tsampa porridge, Tibetan bread, potato soups, momos, noodles, eggs, and ginger lemon honey tea.

Do I need crampons or mountaineering equipment? +

No technical mountaineering gear, ropes, or ice axes are needed. We recommend bringing a pair of simple microspikes and sturdy trekking poles for traction on packed snow across Larkya La Pass in early spring.

What documents do you need to process my Manaslu permit? +

We only need a high-resolution scan of your passport data page and a digital passport-style photo. Our Kathmandu office processes the original permits with the Department of Immigration upon your booking.

Can I add the Tsum Valley to the Manaslu Circuit? +

Yes! We offer an 18-day combined Tsum Valley & Manaslu Circuit expedition which branches off from Philim into the sacred valley of non-violence before rejoining the main circuit at Deng.

What road transportation is provided? +

We provide private 4WD Mahindra Scorpio jeeps from Kathmandu to Machha Khola on Day 1, and from Dharapani back to Kathmandu on Day 13, avoiding overcrowded local buses.

What equipment does Best Treks Nepal provide free? +

We provide a complimentary 100L waterproof duffel bag, a high-grade -15°C down sleeping bag, and a branded trekking shirt upon your arrival in Kathmandu.

Need clarification on Manaslu restricted permits or group pairing?
