Trip Overview & Experience
The Gokyo Lakes & Gokyo Ri Trek is celebrated by seasoned alpinists as the most scenic and rewarding high-altitude journey in the Everest Khumbu region. Diverging from the busier classic EBC trail above Sanasa, this expedition leads you north through fragrant birch and rhododendron forests into the secluded Gokyo Valley, culminating in six sacred cobalt-turquoise glacial lakes nestled at the foot of Mount Cho Oyu (8,188m) and the massive Ngozumpa Glacier.
Ascending to the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,357m / 17,575 ft) at sunrise offers an unmatched 360-degree panorama of four of the world’s six tallest 8,000-meter peaks: Mount Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m). With serene trails, authentic Sherpa hospitality in uncrowded teahouse lodges, and dramatic glacial terrain, this trek is the quintessential Himalayan adventure.

1. Accommodation & Teahouse Lodges on the Gokyo Trail
On the trail, you will lodge in authentic alpine teahouses run by local Sherpa families. Rooms are private twin-share bedrooms with wooden beds, foam mattresses, clean bedsheets, and pillows. In Kathmandu, you will enjoy a comfortable 4-star boutique hotel with private en-suite bathrooms, heating, and buffet breakfast.
At lower elevations (Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazaar), private en-suite bathrooms and in-room charging points are often available. Higher up the valley in Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo (4,790m), lodges feature communal dining halls heated in the evenings with traditional central stoves, with shared Western-style or squat toilets.
2. Available Food, Trail Nutrition & Safe Drinking Water
All three daily meals (13 Breakfasts, 11 Lunches, 11 Dinners) on the trek are included. You may order directly from the varied teahouse menus prepared fresh to order by trained kitchen cooks.
- Breakfast: Oatmeal porridge, muesli with warm milk, Tibetan flatbread with honey/jam, eggs (fried, scrambled, omelets), pancakes, hash browns, and hot ginger lemon tea.
- Lunch & Dinner: The legendary Dal Bhat Power 24 Hour (steamed rice, yellow lentil soup, seasonal vegetable curry, spinach, pickles, with free extra servings!), Sherpa vegetable stew (Shakpa), momo dumplings, fried noodles (Chowmein), macaroni, and garlic soup.
3. Kathmandu to Lukla Flight Details & Ramechhap Transit
The 35-minute twin-otter mountain flight to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (2,840m) provides spectacular aerial views of the Himalayan range.
Peak Season Ramechhap Transit: During peak months (March–May & October–November), Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) redirects Lukla flights to Manthali Airport in Ramechhap to avoid Kathmandu airport air traffic congestion. We provide private tourist vehicle transfers from Kathmandu to Ramechhap (approx. 4 hours) included in your package.
4. Trek Difficulty, Trail Profile & Physical Fitness Preparation
The Gokyo Lakes Trek is graded Moderate to Strenuous. While no technical mountaineering gear (ropes, harnesses, crampons) is required, the trek entails 5 to 7 hours of daily walking over stone stairs, undulating ridges, and rocky moraines, reaching 5,357m at the summit of Gokyo Ri.
Recommended Training: 8 to 12 weeks of aerobic cardiovascular exercise (stair climbing, jogging, swimming, cycling) combined with weighted backpack day hikes (5–8kg) will ensure you comfortably enjoy each trekking day.
5. Best Seasons, Climate & Monthly Temperature Trends
The ideal trekking windows for the Gokyo Valley are Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November):
- Spring (Mar–May): Mild daytime temperatures (12°C to 18°C in valleys), rhododendron blooms covering lower hillsides, and thawing cobalt lakes.
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): The most popular season with crystal-clear post-monsoon skies, optimal mountain visibility, and crisp alpine air.
6. Altitude Sickness (AMS), Symptoms & Acclimatization Strategy
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can impact anyone above 2,800m. Symptoms include mild headache, nausea, loss of appetite, insomnia, and fatigue.
Our Safety Protocol:
- Engineered 2-stage rest days at Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and Dole/Machhermo (4,470m).
- Twice-daily pulse oximeter blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) health audits conducted by your guide.
- Medical-grade oxygen bottle and first aid medical kit on standby with your trek crew.
7. Nepal Trekking Permits & Entry Clearances
Two official permits are mandatory for the Gokyo Lakes Trek:
- Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: NPR 3,000 (~$25 USD) per person.
- Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit: NPR 2,000 (~$16 USD) per person.
8. Mandatory High-Altitude Travel & Helicopter Evacuation Insurance
Travel insurance is mandatory for all international trekkers. Your policy must explicitly cover high-altitude trekking up to 5,500 meters and include emergency medical repatriation and helicopter evacuation dispatch.
9. Electricity, Device Charging & Mobile Network / Wi-Fi Access
Solar power and hydroelectricity are available in teahouses. Lodges charge a nominal fee ($2–$4 USD) for charging power banks, cameras, and phones in the dining room.
Cellular Coverage & Wi-Fi: Ncell and Nepal Telecom (NTC) 4G mobile signals reach Namche, Dole, and intermittently into Gokyo. Teahouses sell Everest Link satellite Wi-Fi prepaid cards (approx. $5 USD for 10GB).
10. Luggage Allowance, Duffel Bags & Ethical Porter Welfare
Domestic Lukla flight baggage allowance is 15 kg (33 lbs) total per trekker (10kg main duffel + 5kg daypack). We provide a heavy-duty waterproof 80L company duffel bag for your main gear.

11. Nepal Tourist Visa on Arrival & Passport Requirements

"Standing atop Gokyo Ri at sunrise was 100x better than Everest Base Camp"
We debated between EBC and Gokyo Lakes for months and are so glad we chose Gokyo! The panoramic sunrise from Gokyo Ri gives you Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu in a single breathtaking 360° horizon. The turquoise lakes below looked unreal. Our guide Pasang checked our oxygen twice daily and made sure we stayed healthy. Exceptional service from start to finish!
"Flawless medical safety management and true Sherpa hospitality"
As a physician, I was genuinely impressed by Best Treks Nepal's rigorous safety standards. The twice-daily pulse oximetry checks, the gradual acclimatization pacing through Dole and Machhermo, and the immediate availability of bottled oxygen gave our group total peace of mind. Unlimited hot Dal Bhat and garlic soup kept our energy sky-high!
"The helicopter return directly from Gokyo Lake was pure magic!"
Trekking up the quiet Gokyo Valley was majestic, but flying back directly from Gokyo Lake over the Ngozumpa Glacier and Khumbu peaks straight to Kathmandu was an experience we will cherish forever. The luxury hotel in Kathmandu was a wonderful reward. Best Treks Nepal handled all permits, flights, and logistics seamlessly.
"Serene trails, fewer crowds, and superior mountain panoramas"
Leaving the main Everest highway at Sanasa was the best decision we made. The Gokyo trail has a fraction of the foot traffic, allowing you to immerse yourself in pristine nature. Our guide Dawa and porter Pemba were absolute legends—warm, hilarious, and always looking out for us. Don't hesitate to book this trek!
