Island Peak Mountaineering Readiness Tracker

You have reviewed 0 of 12 preparation topics.

0%
1. Island Peak (Imja Tse 6,189m) Mountain Profile +

Named 'Island Peak' in 1953 by Eric Shipton's team because it resembles an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche. It rises in the Imja Valley directly beneath the sheer South Face of Lhotse (8,516m).

2. The 100m Ice Headwall & Summit Ridge +

The crux of the climb is the 100-meter ice/snow headwall pitched at 45 to 50 degrees, followed by a classic knife-edge exposed summit ridge leading to the 6,189m top. Fixed ropes and ascenders (jumars) are used.

3. Pre-Climb Glacier School in Chhukung +

On Day 10, our IFMGA Sherpa climbing guides conduct an extensive training clinic on fixed line ascending with jumars, figure-of-eight rappelling, crampon footwork on ice, and self-arrest with ice axes.

4. Why EBC + Kala Patthar First? (98.4% Success) +

Trekking to Everest Base Camp (5,364m) and climbing Kala Patthar (5,545m) on Days 8–9 builds red blood cell counts and deep acclimatization, drastically elevating Island Peak summit success from ~65% to 98.4%.

5. 1:2 Sherpa Guide to Client Climbing Ratio +

On summit night, we maintain a strict 1:2 guide ratio. Every pair of climbers is attached to an experienced Sherpa guide who manages fixed-line carabiner transitions, pacing, and crevasse safety.

6. Base Camp (5,200m) & High Camp (5,600m) Infrastructure +

We establish our private base camp at 5,200m with North Face mountain tents, a dedicated kitchen crew providing fresh hot carbohydrates, and advance High Camp at 5,600m to shorten summit morning by 2.5 hours.

7. Technical Climbing Gear Checklist +

Personal gear needed: Double mountaineering boots (e.g. La Sportiva Nepal / G2), C2/C3 crampons, climbing harness, climbing helmet, jumar ascender, figure-8 descender, 2 locking carabiners, and ice axe. (Available for rent in Chhukung/Kathmandu).

8. NMA Climbing Permits & Garbage Deposit +

Island Peak is regulated by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). All climbing royalties ($250/pax), garbage deposits, and Sherpa insurance are 100% handled and covered in your package.

9. Summit Night Timeline (1:00 AM Departure) +

Wake up at 12:30 AM for hot porridge and tea. Depart High Camp at 1:00 AM with headlamps. Reach Crampon Point at dawn (5:30 AM), summit between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM, and return to Chhukung by early afternoon.

10. High-Altitude Medical Protocols & Oxygen +

Our team carries medical-grade bottled oxygen, Gamow bag access, pulse oximeters, and a Garmin inReach satellite SOS communicator. Direct emergency helicopter dispatch is available at Chhukung and Dingboche.

11. Best Weather Seasons (Spring vs Autumn) +

Spring (April–May) features warmer temperatures, blooming Khumbu valleys, and stable morning conditions. Autumn (October–November) offers crystal-clear skies, firmer ice conditions on the headwall, and spectacular visibility.

12. Flexible 15% Deposit Guarantee +

Lock in your climbing expedition with a 15% deposit ($373). Free date changes up to 30 days prior with lifetime validity protection.
